This month, we’re asking parents about the cost of living crisis, and how the extra costs of caring for a disabled or seriously ill child are impacting their family. Mum Hannah shares her story below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As parents, we all face challenges when raising our children. But when you have children with unique needs, the challenges can be even more significant. My husband and I are parents to three exceptional children, each with individual needs. Our household is neurospicy! Understanding our differences and finding ways to work together helps create a harmonious and supportive environment for everyone in the family, which means we face daily challenges as a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our oldest child is a young carer, which means they have caregiving responsibilities of their own. Our middle child has autism and complex needs, which require specialised care and attention. And our youngest child has severe allergies and eczema, which require frequent medical care and treatments. As you can imagine, managing the daily demands of caregiving can sometimes be overwhelming.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cost of living<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“One of the biggest challenges we face as a family is the cost of living. We must carefully budget and plan for medical bills, specialised equipment, and therapy sessions, all of which can add up quickly. We also need to consider the added costs of my husband being in the military, such as transportation, living away from home, and special diets back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It can be stressful and lead to difficult choices. Such as choosing between paying for health needs or other necessities. Increased fuel prices and groceries have had the most significant impact on the family. We cannot dry clothing outside and must rely on a tumble dryer due to allergies. I can’t walk with my disability, so diesel is a drain on the pocket. And having to rely on specific groceries restricts the grocery budget.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“However, I’ve learned that resources are available to help alleviate some of the financial burdens. I’ve explored options such as government assistance programs, grants, family fund, and other non-profit organisations offering financial support.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Acknowledging the increased costs associated with caring for children with unique needs and planning accordingly has been crucial for me.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“By setting up a budget and seeking financial assistance, I can help alleviate some financial stress and focus on providing the best possible care for my children. Caring for three children with unique needs has challenges but is also incredibly rewarding. I’m constantly learning and growing as a parent. I’m proud of the care and support I can provide for my children. It takes a village to raise a child, and I’m grateful for the support of our family, friends, and community. If you’re a parent of a child with unique needs, know that you’re not alone.
