As the saying goes, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. That has never felt more true to families raising a disabled or seriously ill child, who often need all the support they can find. At Family Fund<\/a>, we provide grants to families raising a disabled or seriously ill child, on a low income. We spoke to families about some of the challenges they face, and how Family Fund helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Family Fund has made my job as a mother 50% easier”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

19-year-old Kelly lives in London with his younger siblings, and his mum and dad, Isoken and John. We spoke with Isoken to learn more about Kelly: “Kelly was diagnosed with autism, global developmental delay and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Even at home we have to keep an eye on him to make sure he’s safe, as he is not aware of danger at all.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that Isoken is only able to work around five hours each day. “When I worked two hours a day, our family struggled with the cost-of-living crisis. Finding time to myself is very difficult though.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Over the years, Family Fund has really helped our family. One year, Family Fund provided an iPad and laptop to Kelly. This gives me chance to do things like prepare dinner, clean the house, but also have some time to myself. I know Kelly is happy and safe. Now Kelly has his own iPad, the other kids can use the family iPad to do their homework, as Kelly can’t understand sharing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our village includes Family Fund”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three-year-old Eve lives near Edinburgh with her older sister, Olivia, and her mum and dad, Rebecca and George.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eve’s mum, Rebecca, talked us through a difficult time, where Eve was struggling to handle her emotions. “When we were struggling with Eve lashing out and having meltdowns, we decided to dedicate a corner of our living room to sensory play. Family Fund gave us a grant towards sensory toys. This corner calms Eve down so much. Some days she lies in front of the bubble lamp for ages. We wouldn’t have been able to invest in these if it wasn’t for Family Fund.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These items take the pressure off us. People talk about it taking a village to raise children. They’re right. But your village doesn’t just have to be family, it can include Family Fund too. Ours does, and we’re so grateful”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
