11-year-old Joshua lives in Barnsley with his 16-year-old brother, James, and mum and dad, Helen and Stephen. Helen spoke with us after Joshua attended our Discover Digital summer festival.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Tell us about Joshua<\/strong>‘<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Joshua loves drawing, building lego and anything creative. He’ll often create and draw on the computer too, using sounds affects or making animations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Joshua has quite severe dyslexia, which means he struggles with anything academic. Also, he doesn’t like to do anything sporty or outdoorsy. This can make the summer holidays really difficult for our family. It feels like most summer clubs are based around sports, and the cost of these clubs can really add up too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘How did Joshua find the Discover Digital Summer Festival?<\/strong>‘<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Joshua attended a handful of Family Fund’s workshops<\/a> and enjoyed them so much. He found them easy to do, but when he got stuck, it was good to know that somebody was there to talk him through things if he needed that extra help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’ve always said that Joshua will either be a graphic illustrator or a mad professor! His favourite workshop was the Badge Buddies. This was where he created his own badge on Canva<\/a>. The workshop gave him and Stephen something to enjoy together in the holidays, and it was finally something that was catered to his creative side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Education isn’t a one-size-fits-all, and we’ve found it hard to find activities that work with Joshua’s dyslexia. It feels like everything is either too academic or centred around sports.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The workshop allowed Joshua to learn a new skill, use his creativity and have fun. It was perfectly catered to his interests, and as his parents, it was a huge relief for us to find something that he’d enjoy, that didn’t cost a penny.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“Joshua still uses Canva now, even weeks after the workshop. He’s creating his own drawings, designs and posters, learning the different tools and functions. Now he knows what he’s doing, he uses Canva independently. When he struggles to do something, I only have to show him once and he picks it up really quickly. It’s easy to use, but challenges him too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
