Summer should be a time for everyone to enjoy some time in the sun, for children to play and families to time outside and with at least a bit of a relaxing break. For families raising disabled and seriously ill children, the summer holidays offer new stresses and worries. Not just how to pay for the summer holidays, alongside rising caring costs and trying to find suitable activities, clubs and days out. Families so often also need to deal with stigma and discrimination when they are out and about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The families we support tell us that they face a lack of understanding and often outright hostility when they tried to enjoy themselves as a family in public. Feeling judged, being stared at, seeing people making negative comments, or using slurs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This can be amplified during the summer – 94% of families say that they’ve experienced a negative reaction to their disabled or seriously ill children on a family break or day out. And 54% of families say this kind of hostility has put them off going on a family break at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every family should feel safe when they step out of their door. Can you help? We’ve put together a list of things the public can think about when out and about this summer to help every family feel safe and welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remember that not all disabilities and illnesses are visible. You can’t ‘see’ if a child has a a condition like autism for example. Sometimes families need a little more patience and respect. Encouraging children to be kind and tolerant makes a big difference too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Disabled and seriously ill children may make noises or gestures to regulate. Being able to do this without being stared at, labelled as being ‘difficult’ or ‘naughty’ gives freedom and helps parents and carers relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parents and carers know their children best. The last thing someone needs is judgement because their parenting looks different. Letting parents provide the care their child needs, in a way that suits their child, without comments means the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Showing a smile, letting a child go first or offering an encouraging word can make another parent’s day. Everyone has challenges and parents and carers with disabled or seriously ill children often face many additional daily challenges.
