Every family treasures moments of joy, laughter and connection. For 13-year old Mikey and his mum Chevonne, those moments are precious. Mikey has complex medical needs – he has a tracheostomy, relies on a ventilator to breathe, and receives nutrition through a central line. Finding connection when life feels limited<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At their home in Hampshire, the family’s days and nights are shaped by Mikey’s care — checking medical equipment, managing feeds, and being ready for emergencies. “It’s constant,” says Chevonne. “We have to be ready all the time – you can’t switch off. But we wouldn’t change him for the world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The energy costs alone are high – around £600 a month just to run Mikey’s essential equipment. Time away from home is rare, and it can feel hard to stay connected with the world beyond their front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One good day through a simple gift<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When Chevonne applied for a Family Fund grant, she chose something that could bring Mikey joy and a sense of togetherness – a VR headset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He loves it,” says Chevonne. “He can’t go to school at the moment, but with the headset he plays games, goes on virtual adventures and chats with his friends. It’s kept him connected and happy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With his headset on, Mikey finds freedom and friendship – the chance to explore, laugh and be with others, even from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One good day can change everything<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For Chevonne, seeing Mikey enjoy himself has transformed the atmosphere in their home. “Sometimes I watch him laughing, and for a few minutes everything feels lighter,” she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
